Visit to Gurunatha Aasramam Orphanage

Objective :
1) To contribute back to the community directly by showing care and love to the orphans.
2) To allow the members participating to know the real need of the orphans.
3) To build closer fellowship not just between Leo members but with the orphans as well.

Date : 26th of March 2011
Time : 8.00 am
Venue : Gurunatha Aasramam Orphanage

We have joined hands in order to create one special day for the children living in Gurunatha Aasramam Orphanage. The journey to the orphanage took around 30 minutes. As we arrived, the caretaker, Miss Gurumatha welcomed us with open hands.

We were invited into the orphanage by the children who were eager to see us. Since most of the children had to go to school only 12 children were present on that day. Before starting our program, the children and some of the members of the club performed their morning Hindu prayers.

After that, Leo Wong Tze Cheng did a brief introduction and proceeds with the ice breaking session. Each member introduced themselves to the children. Leo Wong Wei Lin also prepared a game for the ice breaking session; King of the King. The children and the members bonded after a few rounds of the game.

We were also joined by Leos from the Leo Club of Sam Tet and Leo Alan Thoo. After the ice breaking session, we conducted two games for the children. The first one was the charade. The members and the children were divided into 3 groups. Each group was given an amount of plasticine. The idea of the game was to mould the plasticine into the objects that the other members of the group had to guess.
The second game was to build a chair using recyclable items given by the facilitators. This challenged the creativity of the children as well as the members that participated. The chair that was most stable was crowned as the winner.

A few of the members also prepared a dance performance especially for the children. After the performance ended, the children also joined the dance floor and danced together with the members.

Before departing, Leo Wong Tze Cheng handed over the donations that the members managed to gather for the orphanage to Miss Gurumatha. Miss Gurumatha suggested for us to come visit the orphanage again when all of the children are present. We were served juice before we went back. All the members bid farewell to the children.

Remark by Organizing Chairperson :
The visit to the orphanage this time has managed to bring the members closer together to the community. They now have a better and clearer view on the real need of the community. Although the time spent over there is short, it is fruitful and if possible, such visit will surely be organised again in the future.

The Green Operation 1.0

Objective :
1) To create awareness among students in AIMST about the importance of recycling.
2) To help the April Batch Foundation Students who will be leaving AIMST on finding a more proper way to dispose their unwanted thing s away.
3) To raise fund for the club account.
4) To create closer bonds among members who have participated.

Date & Time : 3/3/2011 ( 5-6pm ) & 4/3/2011 ( 9-10am )
Venue : Hostel's lobby

The Green Operation 1.0 was another project of the club that aims to create a greener campus. It was on the date when the April Batch 2010/11 Foundation in Science Students leave the university upon completion of the course.

Previously, it is observed that there is no proper way for students who will be leaving the university to dispose their unwanted recyclable items. However, things are different now when Leo Club and AMCF came together to successfully conduct the project.

To provide greater flexibility for the members, the project has been carried out for two day. All of the the members were divided into smaller groups and all these groups went around the hostels’ block to collect the recyclable items. It is a tiring but in the same time a fun process when the members are able to interact with each other. More importantly, some of us managed to create fellowship with members of AMCF.

On the second day, more items have been collected as students has dispose their recyclable items over the night. Luckily, more members has attended for the project on that day. Works has been carried out very smoothly. Out of expectation, we actually received calls from some students to collect the recyclable items from their room.

After the collection, members gathered together to sort out and classify the items collected so that it will be easier for the sales to be done. All of the items were kept in the Orientation Hall ( storage for recyclable items ).

Remark from Organizing Chairperson :
The project has been carried out quite successfully but it can be improved if more members can involved themselves in it. Manpower remains a problem and hopefully in the future if any similar project is to be carried out, more members can turn up to help.

Show Your Love –Membership Recruitment Drive

Objective :
1) To introduce this young club in the university to more students
2) To bring in more new members to support the club.
3) To foster closer bonds between those who have participated in the drive.

If anyone would ask of the most important component of Leo Club of AIMST University, the answer is definitely the members.

Member is regarded as the most valuable asset for the club. Without them, there will be nothing that a club will be able to do. Knowing this fact, this membership drive is regarded as a matter of great importance for the club. Every new member obtained will add on to the asset of the club and will help to club to achieve more.
The date whereby the project is being carried out is also the Valentine’s Day. It is a day whereby people in the world will show love to their other half. The club has managed to use this golden opportunity by asking the student of the university to celebrate Valentine’s Day specially, that is by showing their love not to their other half, but to the community by joining Leo Club.

At approximately 11.15 am, preparation works started. Notice board was decorated, slideshows presentation was tested and counter was set up. All was set for the first new member to fill in the form. Many of the people who come for food in the café was attracted by the slideshows presentation being presented. Some of them have stopped by to ask more information about the club while the others will straightaway seek for the New Member Form.

Besides the counter approach, some of the members who are involved in the recruitment drive on that day have decided to form a group of 3 people and walk around the café and approach the people face to face. They will briefly explain about the purpose of the club and some of the interesting projects being carried out not just by the home club, but by other clubs as well. This way has proven to be effective as the team managed to get for the club a few new members as well.
At around 1.30pm, the recruitment drive has to come to an end as majority of the members involved in the drive have class at 2.00pm. Clean up work are being carried out and at around 1.45pm ,everything was back in order and we left the place with 15 new members in hand.

Remark from Organizaing Chairperson :
The project has been carried out quite smoothly, thanks to the help from not just the BODs, but also the members of the club who has show their hand when help is needed. As the club is now with more new members, hopefully more projects can be carried out to help the community better. We Serve.

Continuous Leo Development Orientation Workshop and Test

 Objective :
1) To provide a chance for the members of the club to participate in the CLD program only available in District 308B2.
2) To ensure the members of the club are well aware of the purposes, objectives, activities, benefits and other expect of the Leo program.
3) To allow the members to clear the doubts they have about the Leo program with the Leo Cabinet member
.

The ‘Continuous Leo Development’ test is a part of the Leo Program in District 308B2 to allow fellow Leos to participate further in the program. The workshop was being carried with the main aim to expose the members with the basic knowledge and understanding that a Leo member should have about Leo Club, the Leo Program as well as the Lions Club.

Most of the member joined the club for the simple reason ‘To Serve” without knowing much about the club. As the members of the club are getting more and more committed to the club, it is important for them to be able to in the same time, have a greater understanding regarding the club.

The workshop on that day was being conducted by the District 308B2 Leo Cabinet member. The presenter on that day is Leo Eliza Chia, who is the President for the Leo Cabinet. Together with her attending and assisting the conduction of the workshop are Leo Wah Si Sheng and Leo Foong Chee Keat, who are also the member of the District Leo Cabinet.

The workshop begins at 8.10pm and was being conducted in the Orientation Hall. Members are listening attentively during the entire presentation. The capability of Leo Eliza to present the information acted synergistically with the colourful slideshows presentation in keeping the members attention on the content that is to be presented. Throughout the entire workshop, members have given response and have actively involved in the discussion with the presenters when a question is being raised from the floor.

After the presentation that lasted from about 35 minutes, a 10 minutes break was given to the members. In the same time, those who have doubts about the presentation are given the chance to clarify them. This short break has also allowed the members to have discussion among themselves on the topics being discussed.

The CLD Orientation Test was being carried out at about 9.00pm. A total of 40 members have took part in the test. Candidates are given 30 minutes to attempt the objective as well as the subjective questions given in the paper. They were allowed to leave after the test. The last paper was collected at 9.30pm sharp and after cleaning up the venue, the BODs left at around 9.45pm.

Remark from Organizing Chairperson:
First of all, a deep appreciation is expressed for the university for allowing outsiders to enter the university to conduct the workshop. Special thanks also to the Leo Cabinet officers who has rushed to Sg. Petani from Penang and Ipoh after their work. Members has shown their support towards the workshop conducted and has definitely benefited from it.

A Trip to Penang SPCA

Objective :
1) To give a chance to the participating members to know more about the function and the difficulties faced by SPCA.
2) To extend our hand of help to SPCA Penang in any matter that they will need our help according to our ability.
3) To create closer bonds among members who joined the trip.

In the spirit of Leo, about 11 of the AIMST University Leo Club members paid a visit to the Society of Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals (SPCA) on the morning of 11th of December 2010. We initially wanted to do volunteering tasks at the shelter, but was informed that only fully trained volunteers are allowed to walk and feed the dogs as well as clean the dog kennels and cat pens. Thus we had the full afternoon playing and interacting with our furry friends.

Once the tour was over, we had a short briefing from the caretakers of the place involving the work they do at the shelter and the issues faced by them. Mostly, the shelter was facing space issues whereby they can only afford to house a certain amount of animals at any given time. If a dog or cat isn’t adopted within a certain time period (usually 4-6 months) it would be humanely euthanized. Sadly, this is the sad truth of the strays in the shelter, some of which were lost pets whose owners could not be located or contacted.

We hope with this visit, those who participated developed awareness of the reality of inhumane acts on animals, thus inculcating compassion towards these animals among Leos. The Leos were also exposed to the basics of running an animal shelter.. Most importantly, we introduced the Leo club to SPCA Penang.

Remark from Organizing Chairperson:
The project has been carried out successfully after many unforeseen circumstances has postponed it from November to this moth. The number of members participating would be higher if it was not because of the exam that wil be carried out in the week immediate after the trip. Hopefully, in the future, more and more trips can be done or even bringing over SPCA to AIMST.

International Leo Day Celebration – MAD Leo Eco Parade

In conjunction with the Leo Day 2010, Leo Club of Georgetown Mutiara, Penang has organized the M.A.D Eco Parade and Fiesta at Penang Times Square. The project was headed by Leo Kim Kek Teong. The event has started in 4th December 2010 and has ended on the next day.

Among the events and activities conducted on that day were Leo Exhibition, Flea Market, Children Colouring Contest, Kids Talent Quest and Street Dance Competition. The climax of the whole celebration is the Leo Parade around the Georgetown on the 5th December 2010.

Leo Club of AIMST University (Omega) is privileged enough to be invited to join in this mega celebration. Due to the fact that there is already a home project being carried out on the same day, we were only able to send a team of 6 members to attend the event. The members that have attended the celebration include Leo TzeCheng Wong, Leo Amy Ting Li, Leo Chew ChuHan Chew, Leo Valane Tang, Leo YeanWen Ooi and Leo Winnie Lai. It surprised us to see such a big number of Leos attending the event. As it is a region project, Leos have come even from Selangor and Perak to show their support.

We have reached Penang Times Square around 8.30am. Upon completing the registration process and a short briefing, we were all set for the parade. We have covered areas like Komtar, Penang Road and so on. Along the journey, the Chingay and drums which have accompanied us have given us strong motivation to continue to stay fresh along the entire journey. To add to these, the ‘roaring’ and the eco costume of other Leos have motivated us. It took just a short moment for us to realize that we are already at the end of the parade which has actually taken more than an hour.

At around 9.15am, we are back to Penang Times Square. A light breakfast was provided by the organizing committee. While waiting for the official opening ceremony of the event which is scheduled to start at 10.00am, we managed to have a walk around the Flea Market held together with the parade. It took us not long to realize that there was actually no plastic bags and polystyrene plates and cups used during the entire event.

Upon the arrival of the guest of honour, the official ceremony began with the national anthem. A few speeches was delivered. Most of the speeches has touched on the concept of Making A Difference (MAD). Lion Alan Thoo has even given the illustration on how a small step by every Malaysian to just use 1 plastic bag less can have on the environment. The official ceremony was rounded off by the awards, souvenirs and certificates presentation to respective clubs that have participated.

Visit to Old Folks Home

Objective :
1) To show care and passion to the elderly in the old folks home.
2) To expose members to the plight that is faced by some of the members in the community to induce their heart of serving.
3) To create closer bonds among members and the old folks and among members who themselves have participated.

5th December is the official Leo Day which will be celebrated by Leo Clubs all around the world. As Leo Club of AIMST University (Omega) is just newly formed, we feel that it is essential for us to get back to the basic, that is, to serve and contribute back to the community. In parallel to this aim, we have chosen to visit the Tan Xiang Shi Yuan Old Folks Home in Sungai Petani, Kedah in conjunction with the celebration.

The event started at 8.45 am, where all members gather at the cafeteria to have a light breakfast before departure. A few selected member begin loading the provision collected to be donated to the old folk’s home to the vehicles. After that, the delegation departed from AIMST University at 9.30 a.m. With a journey of 30 minutes, we arrive at the destination.

The first activity was a brief introduction regarding the background of the old folk’s home by the person in charge of running it. After that all members who were present were given a tour around the compound of the old folks home.

At 11.00 am, all the citizen of the old folk’s home were gathered at the great hall where a brief speech were given, follow by fellowship between the Leos and the old folks. A few performances were prepared by the club members. Interestingly, some of the old folks have even joined in when the Leos are actually performing.

Lunch was held at 12.15pm, where the members were able to have their lunch together with the old folks who were present at that time. After lunch, it marks the end of the trip to the old folk’s home. Before we bid farewell to the old folks, a group photos of the members present on that day with the old folks.

Remark from Organizing Chairperson :
The project has achieved a great success in terms of creating the bonds between members and the old folks. It is just so warm to get to see them interacting with each other as if they were close friends although they have just meet up each other for the first time. Hopefully, in the near future, more such events can be prepared and more members will be able to join in.
